How Dads best advice led 15 women in geschftlicher umgang to succeedHow Dads best advice led 15 women in business to succeedBetween the truly terribly-wonderful dad jokes, the candid humor and the smart advice, good fathers can have a way of changing their daughters lives. Dad welches the best mentor for some female entrepreneurs, who have built careers that then built successful companies. Often times, the targeted, personal and kind-hearted business advice from their fathers has provided that extra jolt of motivation they need to keep going.pullquoteI have been taught that hard times are survivable because at the end of the day everything is survivable./pullquoteIn honor of Fathers Day, we asked successful women to share the fatherly wisdom thats helped shape them- leid only as people, but as business leaders. Let their experiences inspire you to take that next leap in your career.Always negotiate your salary. Before my first job interview, I asked my father what salary range I sho uld ask for. His advice was this As in any negotiation, if they dont laugh at your first number, it was too low.- Cheryl Eisen, Founder and President of Interior Marketing GroupThe harder you work, the luckier you get.I have to thank my dad for guiding me in being an successful entrepreneur today. Ive been working with my dad since I was 7 years old, and behind my success is the support of my family. My dad once told me, the harder you work, the luckier you get. What he meant by working hard is doing what you love and being 110% in it. Everything we do requires work, so the harder you work, you can achieve your goals in being a successful entrepreneur. This also puts you in the right positions and opens up opportunities and increases luck And you know what they say Its better to be lucky than to be good. That advice gave me the strength and power to do what I do everyday without feeling like its real work.- Rolan Pongpuntara, founder of Chomp EateryYou have to play with the best of them.My father was a successful soccer coach at Stanford University for many years. And while my father and I never had a close relationship, one thing always brought us together soccer. The best advice he ever gave me was this, Erika, if you want to be good at soccer, you have to play with the best of them. What my father was saying was to improve your skills as a soccer player, you must surround yourself with people that are better than you. They will push you to, in turn, work harder. You will learn things from them and you will try to meet their skill, even if you cant entirely.pullquoteBecause of his advice, I really did believe that I could and would do it even it if it was hard at the time./pullquoteThis advice sticks with me today, as I work in the field of couples therapy. I see couples, marriages and individuals sometimes at their darkest hours in life. And while I am decades past my training as a soccer player, I use the saatkorn advice to this day I attend the workshops and seminars of the greatest couples therapists in the world. I watch. I learn. I train. I remember the advice of my father.- Erika Boissiere, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Founder of The Relationship Institute of San FranciscoIf not now, when? When I first moved to New York City from Virginia in 2006, a wide-eyed recent college grad, I didnt have a job, had little to no savings and told my family Trust me. Ill figure it out. While understandably there was some tentativeness from family members, Ill never forget my dad saying Go. Do it now. If not now, when? from the very beginning. His advice to go for it, to never stay complacent, represents a rebellious nature Ive always had in me, thats largely been inspired by my father. As a young Japanese-American growing up in Tokyo on an American military base, he rebelled early on. As the family legends tell it, skipping class in kindergarten to ride solo into the city to discover what Tokyo had in store, to rebelling against racis m in 1970s Virginia when his family moved there and he grappled with his identify as other in a school where the only other Asian American student was his brother. That saatkorn supportive advice he gave me when I moved to New York City became even mora palpable when I took the biggest step of my career, taking the leap to go full time as a co-founder of Shine. He said to me, Go. Do it now. If not now, when? Im so glad I did. Thanks, Dad.- Naomi Hirabayashi, co-founder of ShineNothing is ever handed to you.Im forever grateful for all of the advice my dad (and father of 5) shares with me and my siblings but the insight thats always resonating with me most is that nothing is ever handed to you.Whatever struggles or oppression any of us faces, it can be tempting to point to our circumstance as to why we dont have that job, the money, that apartment, the praise of our peers, etc. While circumstance is not to be taken lightly and is a very real part of our identity- our resilience and o ur ability to improve our situations is what makes us successful. If want big things to happen in our lives, we have to make the happen- despite everything and everyone that may try to make it harder for us. He is stronger for the things hes faced in his life and I am stronger for mine. Thats something that will always motivate and stay with me.- Marah Lidey, co-founder of ShinepullquoteMy dad always reminds me to do what I love and the money will follow./pullquoteWork hard and trust yourself.People say I am successful because I am my fathers daughter. The best advice he ever gave me was to work hard and to trust yourself, you can do it. This was so impactful to me because for the during Ever-Prettys early years, I ate, slept and breathed Ever-Pretty. I use sleep lightly here, because even when I slept, I dreamed about the company. If I hadnt worked so hard I would never be where I am today. His advice to trust myself really got me through the hard times. Because of his advice, I re ally did believe that I could and would do it even it if it was hard at the time. Whenever I was down, his advice would help me believe I could get back up.- Anna Shi, CEO, president and founder of Ever-PrettyDeliver beyond your expectations. It will not only gain you loyalty but gain trust with your clients. This advice rings true to most peoples career choice but mine specifically as an event planning/production business. There are so many details, and I always try to have at least one surprise element the client wasnt expecting. It could be a simple decor piece or a food choice to let them know I was listening and also understand their vision. It is impactful advice because in a world of options and endless Google searches, it comes down to delivery to obtain and retain clients. - Sarah Sebastian, Owner of Rose Gold CollectiveDo what you love.My dad always reminds me to do what I love and the money will follow. He has taught me by example that finding your passion and turning it into your career will make you successful and leads to a much more fulfilled life. I am fortunate that I have truly found my calling in entrepreneurship. - Alice Rossiter, Founder of Alices TableAlways keep your word. The best advice my dad gave me goes for life and business. He told me to always be honest and keep my word to people. It may be the littlest thing as promising a resume (or another product) in a week and delivering it on time, but this matters to clients and customers. Admittedly, this can be difficult in the business world. But, my dads advice has really served me well, and I always try my best to follow it.- Neely Raffellini, Founder, 9 to 5 ProjectpullquoteMy dads response made me realize how much faith he had in me, and bolstered my faith in myself. /pullquoteKeep looking ahead. Some of the best career advice my Dad has given me is to keep moving forward with my dreams even when things are hard. Starting a business is definitely not for the faint of heart and my dad has always encouraged me to focus on the progress Ive made and to keep looking ahead. Just like life, there will be ups and downs and my Dads support has always helped keep me on track. While simple, having this advice has always helped bring things back into perspective and moving forward. - Anna Osgoodby, co-founder of Bold PopStudy what youre interested in.Back in college, I remember not knowing what to major in and turning to my dad for help. His response surprised me. He told me that I wasnt someone he thought had to go to college to be successful afterwards, that I should major in something I enjoy learning about, because regardless of whether or not I would use that after college, it would give me a wealth of knowledge that was important to me. My dads response made me realize how much faith he had in me, and bolstered my faith in myself. It made me view college as an experience, not something I needed to be successful. I ended up majoring in Environmental Studies and Geogra phy and Urban Studies. Now as a fashion designer, Im in a completely different field, as he suspected, but I apply the education I got by focusing on sustainable materials and ethical manufacturing. Ive never forgotten that advice, and so far it has served me well. Thanks for believing in me, Dad, and teaching me to believe in myself - Avi Loren Fox, founder and CEO of WildMantle.compullquoteTo have a goal and to believe wholeheartedly that it is possible, even when the evidence may show it is not./pullquoteKeep learning. My dad always encouraged me to pursue a good education he set high standards for me and emphasized how a good education would enable me to pursue my dreams. His story really motivated me because he was a professor in China who moved to the U.S. for grad school and eventually became a successful entrepreneur. He is constantly learning himself and is still mastering new things all the time, he recently picked up acting and is starring in a feature film that will be re leased this summer I am so inspired by his zest for learning throughout life. - Coral Chung, Founder and CEO of SenreveTo not follow his advice. The best business advice I ever got from my dad was to never work for myself. He hated the financial fluctuations in the family business he inherited from his father and grandfather. And for a long time, I followed his advice, but after too many years as a mediocre sales rep with similar financial fluctuations, I realized Id rather control my own choices and clients. When I launched my first business in 2005, he could not have been more proud, and now with The Rising Tides, he can see the real impact my work makes on women in the workplace. I think because of his advice, I approached each venture realistically and deliberately, and still seek lots of input from others. - Eileen Scully, Founder, The Rising TidesMake a goal and believe in it wholeheartedly.I founded quarterlane a year ago and over the course of the these many months, I find my self returning to my dads advice daily to have a goal and to believe wholeheartedly that it is possible, even when the evidence may show it is not.The first time I found myself putting this advice into practice was my senior year in high school. I had applied early decision to the college of my dreams and was waitlisted. My chances to go were much better during the early decision round, and so my first reaction was to give up. Yet my dad reminded me to keep my dream in sight and get to work. I felt confident in my writing, so I sent this college every single writing assignment I did for my English class that spring. I would just pop the paper in the mail with a little note. And it worked I was accepted Many other times I have returned to this advice to put practice behind faith, especially now with quarterlane. Creating something new is a leap of faith - that is simply what it is And once you leap, its the 100% faith, commitment and then the little right actions toward the goal tha t make all the difference. - Elizabeth Lane, Founder of quarterlaneDo not quit.At 63, I challenged my dad to run a half-marathon with our whole family of non-runners. He had never run more than a mile in his life, but signed up. He ran through knee injuries, below zero temperatures and the muddy dirt roads of Maine in the Spring. Then on race day, he ran, despite his pain, every step of the way. My dad doesnt quit. He keeps going regardless of any obstacle and, he taught me and my two sisters to do the same. He doesnt talk about it he just does it. He has Libbygrit the intangible inner willpower to persevere. He never told us what to do, he developed in us the willpower to figure it out and he let us test our mettle endlessly with the same challenges he gave our brothers. As an entrepreneur nothing has helped me get through tough situations better than the knowledge that Im made from Libby grit, that Im raised with Libby grit, that I have been taught that hard times are survivable because at the end of the day everything is survivable. - Kristina Libby, CEO of SoCu

The Real Reason You Shouldnt Put Your Address on Your Resume

The Real Reason You Shouldnt Put Your Address on Your ResumeThe Real Reason You Shouldnt Put Your Address on Your ResumeThe Real Reason You Shouldnt Put Your Address on Your ResumeIf youre going to rely on the standard templates used for writing a professional resume, youd see that a home address should be written at the top. However, have you ever thought that it could be one of the reasons why youre having a hard time landing the job that youve always wanted? Believe it or not, your address could possibly have an impact on whether youre going to get hired or not.And heres why you shouldnt put your address on your resumeIt Reveals Your Commute TimeObviously, an employer would take into consideration the commute time of the employee theyre going to hire.Employers and recruiters want to avoid the trouble of hiring an employee who lives far away from work, because this doesnt only cause stress to the employee, but to his employer as well in a sense that hed be less productive at work. Likewise, it also increases the chances of an employee quitting the job. This can be a two-edged sword not only will you be losing a job, but this also gives the company a bad image because they have to fire you and look for a replacement. This results in more work, and a waste of time and money for them.Furthermore, if the job youre eying on is in a different city, its also ideal that you imply on your CV that you wouldnt mind commuting long distances if you have to. It would be better if youd state that if youre going to get hired, youd also be willing to relocate if needed. This would increase the chances of getting hired, as youre clearly indicating to your employer that youre really serious and want to get the sttte. You Could Be a Victim of Identity TheftAlthough this doesnt happen very often, there are cases that you can put yourself in a position of getting your credentials stolen just because you have indicated your home address in your CV.There are fake recruitment agencies that post job openings as a way to gain information about candidates, and if you become a victim of them, then youd be in trouble. So, its always safe to just omit your address in your resume instead. Is There a Right Time to Put Your Address on a Resume? If you really feel that you have to put your address on a resume, make sure that its near, or even in the same city where the office is located. This would give the recruiters or the employer enough information to know that youre a local and that you wont have a hard time going to and from your work place.Final WordsAlthough it has been customary to include an address on a resume, it would be better to not include this at all. Dont worry, this wont send off alarm bells for most employers, but could even have a positive result.Just keep in mind that most employers are more interested in knowing your skills than where you live. As long as youre going to be fully committed in your future job, where you live or where your address is wont never be an issue to them.

How to overcome your laziness and become motivated

How to overcome yur laziness and become motivatedHow to overcome your laziness and become motivatedIn the startup world, its part of your job to combat laziness in all its different forms, whether thats for your gruppe or for yourself. If youre a founder or a team lead, its a matter of motivating every employee to be the best version of themselves as possible. If youre an employee, its a matter of overcoming those lazy streaks to boost your own productivity. But this can be hard. All of us get lazy at one point or another, but nobody aspires to be lazy at work - not even poor performers. Behaviors we label as lazy usually stem from a complex set of root causes, as opposed to some personality trait or lack thereof. When an employee is sitting paralyzed before an empty spreadsheet, for example, thats usually a sign of procrastination or nerves - not innate laziness. The first step for you in motivating yourself and your team, then, is identifying what these root causes of laziness are s o you can watch out for them.Cause 1 Anxiety about your work not being good enoughEmployees who have a high attention to detail - who are perfectionists - are susceptible to this trap, where they become so nervous about delivering something of poor quality that they cant work on it at all.At our gaming studio, my co-founder, Alex, and I have hired a few people who fall into this camp. Most are incredibly talented and committed to their jobs, but they get inside their own heads, convincing themselves theres a better way to present the information in question, or to articulate their messaging - whatever the case might be.What these employees need help with is getting out of their heads.Which is why Alex and I have gotten into the habit of making our employees take short vacations when they begin showing this kind of behavior. Its a matter of forcing them to detach from the task thats stressing them out so they can return to it with a clear - and productive - mind.If at your compa ny you dont have the luxury of letting certain folks take long weekends at home when necessary, try instead having more regular check-ins with them so you can keep a pulse on their more anxious tendencies and reassure them when they flare.Cause 2 Confusion about what the first steps of a task areMost people need an external structure for breaking down tasks. When we launched our gaming studio, we started with a flat structure (as most startups often do). But we quickly recognized how this led to confusion, which itself negatively impacted productivity.Having a group of four developers each breaking down their own tasks is not as effective as having a PM or a team lead helping them facilitate this process. While this is not groundbreaking by any means, its important to realize that lack of structure, or bad task management, can cause people to freeze.A formal org structure helps lend accountability to the development process and helps eliminate any laziness that may come from task con fusion.Cause 3 Feeling overwhelmed by the volume of tasksThis is a problem leaders themselves often have. I know I do, personally - mostly because Im bad at multitasking. The solution is being able to say no to tasks that are low priority when something of higher priority needs to get done - smart prioritization, in other words.Of course, this can be tough, and employees who struggle with it often see their productivity dip. They end up getting paralyzed thinking about all they have to do, and they end up doing none of it.The solution, as it happens, is best said in this advice from Reid Hoffman there are always far more problems and issues clamoring for your attention than you have the resources to address. You might feel like a firefighter, except instead of trying to extinguish a blaze in one contained spot, you can see separate fires all around you - and you dont have time to put out all of them. One of the ways entrepreneurs can stay alive is by deciding to let certain fires burn so they can focus on the fires that, if allowed to rage unchecked, really will destroy the company.Employees should be encouraged to embrace this mindset. Always be working, but work on whatevers most important in the moment.Cause 4 Fear of asking for helpWe once had a group of junior developers who didnt know how to use Git - which in turn impacted how much they got done - but they were too embarrassed to ask for help. All team leads should make it explicitly clear to their employees that its fine asking for help. But you should also set something of an internal standard in which if an employee is stuck on any kind of project for longer than X hours, the expectation is they ask for help. What you cant have are team members sitting at their desk not doing what they should be because they lack critical information.Cause 5 Disagreement with decision makingInternal strife can, of course, also affect productivity.I know this from experience, too. Before Alex and I made a more conce rted effort to be transparent in our decision-making processes, we once made a decision about a feature redesign which our team didnt agree with.In retrospect, it welches an easy choice we made - we were under pressure to finish that particular project before the end of the year, and we simply needed to get it done - but it rubbed our team the wrong way. It made them think we didnt value their input. From there, the teams anger evolved from disagreement with the decision to something more personal - and our collective effectiveness ground to a halt.Leaders should never let arguments devolve in such an impactful way.Instead, combat these challenges preemptively by building systems and processes which guarantee transparency and ensure everyone on your team remains on the saatkorn page in your shared effort to drive your company forward.Cause 6 Employees psychological needs arent being metThis, ultimately, is the most common cause of laziness within teams. Because of that, I believe its critical that all founders and team leads educate themselves around what exactly employees psychological needs are. That starts with understanding Self-Determination Theory (SDT).SDT says that humans have certain inherent positive features - or growth tendencies - yet at the same time have psychological needs which must be met in order for them to self-motivate. They areCompetence. The feeling like they have control over an outcome and the capacity to get better and better at a specific function.Relatedness. The feeling like theyre connected meaningfully with othersAutonomy. The desire to direct their own lives. If youre struggling to combat laziness in your company, read up on SDT and ask yourself are you ensuring your employees psychological needs are being met? Sometimes, after all, the reason for your teams declining motivation might not be your people, but you. This article was originally published on Quora.com.

Make the Most of Your Meetings

Make the Most of Your Meetings Typical managers spend nearly 40% of their work hours in meetings, not to mention the time spent preparing (and recuperating). A survey of business leaders showed 33% of time spent in meetings is unproductive 75% of the respondents said it is almost essential to have an agenda, yet they use them only 50% of the time Only 64% of meetings achieve their intended outcomeA disciplined approach to making the most of meeting time will help to maximize gruppe effectiveness.tischset an objectiveAnswer these three questions. What, ultimately, do I want to achieve by this meeting? What, specifically, has to be accomplished by the end of this meeting? When the meeting is over, how will I know whether the meeting was a success? Use your answers to define your meetings objective. Then make participants aware of the objective up front.Make sure the key people attendKey people are t he ones with the knowledge and experience needed to accomplish the meetings objective.Arrange for the proper facility Little things (how the room is arranged, the room temperature, or whether theres coffee or not) can make a tremendous difference in the success of a meeting.Write an agendaThere are numerous ways to accomplish this task. Have a planning committee set the agenda, or send out a pre-meeting survey asking people to list one to three topics they want to discuss. When writing an agenda, put the most important items at the beginning. The agenda should be distributed far enough in advance so participants can adequately prepare for the meeting. The agenda should state the date, location, start and finish time, topics to be covered, the expected outcome (information only, discussion, or decision), and time allotted to each topic.Studies show that productivity decreases sharply after about an hour and a half of meeting. If you must have a long meeting, provide adequate breaks.Ke ep the meeting on trackConsider using a facilitator or getting a team member to serve as timekeeper. If a facilitator is not used, the meeting leader is responsible for keeping the meeting on course and adjourning on time. You could also assign meeting roles to facilitate progress such as chairperson, note taker, timekeeper or observer. You might also allow the participants to suggest agreements for the meeting before the meeting begins, like those listed below. One person speaks at a timeNo side conversations Everyone participates Listen as an ally Set time frames and stick to them Use a consensus decision-making modelIf, as the leader, you notice that only a few are contributing, you can direct a question to others, such as What do you think about . . .? Should discussion stray from the agenda, you should ask, Is this subject relevant? and have the group determine if it should be added to the agenda or saved for a future meeting.Summarize the meetingIn closing, the leader should su mmarize the groups accomplishments, review action items (including who, what, and when) and, thank everyone for their participation. Writing Characters in Fiction

Writing Characters in Fiction Writing Characters in Fiction Characters are depicted through both  narrative  and dialogue in a work of fiction. They can be flat  or minor, or  round  and  major, developed with more depth. The persona is revealed through the characters responses to conflict, through  dialogue, and through descriptions. Characters in fiction can have many roles and purposes, all of them dictated by the writers intent and style, working together to intricately move the plot forward. The Protagonist The protagonist is the main character, the hero or heroine of the story. In some cases, the reader experiences the story through this characters eyes. In others, the protagonist might be only one of several characters whose perspective is described. The protagonist does not have to be a character with whom the reader identifies. He might even be an anti-hero, unpleasant or even evil, and thats fine if it furthers the plot. Or she might be a true hero but could also be a character the reader is supposed to dislike due to a certain character flaw or circumstance. Think Becky Sharp in Vanity Fair. She gave new meaning to the term ruthless, but come on, fess up. Werent you rooting for her just a little?   The Antagonist In many genres- particularly but not exclusively fantasies, thrillers, spy novels, crime stories, and mysteries- the protagonist is pitted against an antagonist. The antagonist can be a truly immoral or evil individual, such as Dr. Moriarty in the Sherlock Holmes stories, but he can also be a well-meaning but domineering parent or even a bumbling idiot who unintentionally stands in the way of the protagonist. The bottom line is that the antagonist is at odds with the hero or heroine in the plot, and sometimes the story involves quite serious odds involving life-or-death circumstances. Shakespeares Iago in Othello is a good example, but a protagonist can also be a whole group of people: the government, a cult, or a crime syndicate. Using Metaphor In some works, characters are created not as fully realized human beings or fantastical beings but rather as metaphors for a particular human quality. Lord Voldemort in the Harry Potter books isnt intended to be seen as a fully conceived person, but rather as a metaphor for the terrible outcome that results from scorning and opposing the power of love.   Characters As Plot Devices In some cases, characters exist largely for the purpose of moving the story along from one plot point to the next. These characters are only sketchily conceived. Theyre flat characters- one- or two-dimensional. Its not who this guy is or how he feels but what he does that matters. Stock characters can serve in this capacity. They tend to be stereotypes without much depth, like a womanizer at the bar or a beggar on a street corner, but they dont have to be. Stock characters can be more complex when the plot requires it. Writers commonly create characters whose sole purpose is to motivate the protagonist to take the actions that propel the story forward. A good example of this type of flat character is Scar in  The Lion King.  Compare him to Simba, a round character. You  knew  Simba. Scar...maybe not so much.   Required Characters Some stories are built around a time, a place, or a situation that requires certain types of characters to be present. These characters might not be terribly important to either the plot or the theme, but their absence would nonetheless be felt. Imagine a story that takes place in a hotel environment without the inclusion of at least a few members of the hotel staff. A story that takes place on a spaceship headed for Mars would be incomplete without at least a sketch of the ships captain, even if hes not a main character. Someone might be shot and killed during a bank heist. His identity, feelings, thoughts, and depth arent important to the plot, but the fact that he was a fatality would be.   How to Create Characters Be clear in your own mind about your characters purpose in your work before you begin writing and  creating a character. Why and how does he move your plot to the finish line? You can begin fleshing him out when youve answered that question, and youll probably want to give this part of the process a little time if hes your protagonist. Live with him for a few days or even a few weeks before you pen that first sentence. As events unfold in your life, ask yourself what he would do or how he would react in the same circumstance. Get to know him.   Although its important to fully know and understand your protagonists personality traits and her motivations, interests, and talents, youll need far less detail for a character who simply serves as a plot device. You dont have to spin your wheels delving into what makes her tick.   Go With Your Gut As anyone who has ever written a successful work of fiction will tell you, your gut is a powerful tool. And few if any drafts of fiction  are perfect the first time around. More than likely, youll dash out a rough draft then revise it two, maybe even three times.   If a character jumps into your pages seemingly out of nowhere while youre writing that first draft, why not let him hang out there for a while? Your subconscious might be trying to tell you something. He could be important later, providing a pivotal plot twist. You can leave him be and if he turns out to be superfluous, give him the ax when youre preparing your final draft. You can always write him out later if it turns out that he has nothing to offer.   No matter how significant or insignificant your character is, be sure the person is consistent and believable within your storys parameters. Motivations and actions must work together  so that the reader isnt left confused and frustrated.

Age Discrimination Isnt About Age

Age Discrimination Isnt About Age Age Discrimination Isnt About Age If youre over 40, its natural to worry about age discrimination after all, thats the age at which you start to be protected against discrimination by Federal law and even if you dont look your age, you might be starting to feel it now and then. (Maybe youve noticed you cant stay up as late as you used to, or maybe you caught yourself making that noise your dad makes when he up from the chair!) So youre feeling a bit older than youd like and now you have to look for a job. The good news is that age discrimination isnt about age. Its about all the things that people associate with growing older. Like getting slower. Being less healthy than a younger person. Falling behind the latest technology advancements. Its usually not that Manager X doesnt want any 50 year-olds in his company its abut the fact that Manager X has a bunch of stereotypes in his head about what being 50 means and its those stereotypes he wants to avoid. Once you understand this, there are all kinds of things you can do to ensure that age isnt an issue on your resume. My Tips for Minimizing Age Discrimination Think they might worry youre behind the times technologically? Show them that youre not. Include URLs to social networking profiles such as LinkedIn and Twitter. Set up a personal website using a tool like Weebly.com or Visual CV and then add the URL to your resume. When it comes to fighting the perception of ill health or lack of energy, I recommend adding any hobbies that are sports-related or require high energy. For example, one former client included his experience running marathons and riding in long bicycle races. Another included yoga as a hobby. Finally, consider leaving older experience off your resume to prevent people from guessing your age. For example, you might want to omit jobs that go back more than 10 years. Note: If this experience is important to your sales message maybe because it directly relates to what you want to do next or includes a banner name company in your industry you don’t have to eliminate it. Instead start a new section of your resume called “early experience” and simply omit dates of employment in this section. (By starting the new section, you give yourself permission to change the format in this way.) None of these techniques will change your age but all of them will change the all-important perception of your age and that is all you need to do.

Are office hours the solution to workplace sexual harassment

Are 'office hours' the solution to workplace sexual harassment Are 'office hours' the solution to workplace sexual harassment There are commonalities between large universities and the modern workplace. Much like administrators or professors, executives are often over-scheduled with sparse one-on-one time for their employees. And meanwhile, companies - like college campuses - are adapting to major cultural shifts in the country. So it may not come as a huge surprise that some chief executives have adopted a college practice that has been effective over the years: Office hours. The scheduled slots have become integral to academic life, when students get face time with their otherwise occupied professors. Now, corporate leaders are holding their very own office hours to make time for the voices that often go unheard in their workplaces.“It’s a trend that’s definitely going upward where employers are saying, ‘I’ve lost touch with my employees, with my culture. How do I get that touch back?’” said  Jared Pope,   HR law specialist and founder of Work Shield.Access to leadersOffice hours in the cor porate world have been in fashion for some years now. Back in 2009, Fast Company co-founder Bill Taylor wrote about the phenomenon in Harvard Business Review after hearing about its adoption by others. But the practice is now part of a wider solution at some workplaces looking to prevent bad actors from engaging in sexual misconduct on the job. And indeed, Pope said creating a culture of openness through office hours can be a way to thwart a would-be harasser.“Having that office hour, or that ability to talk with executive leadership, it’s a step in the right direction to offer this workplace free of harassment, free of discrimination,” Pope said.Though “office hours” may be a catch-all phrase, not all of these employer-employee interfaces have to be in an office with a closed door. The allotted time could be over breakfast or lunch, Pope said, or take the form of a coffee with the CEO or a round table. The trend just means getting the leadership to different populations wi thin a company so that the people in charge are accessible and ready to listen.Culture of opennessBut, Pope cautioned, a culture of openness is only one component of a larger fix. As long as the employer is involved in handling reports of sexual misconduct, an employee who has been the victim of harassment may fear retaliation or termination, or might just be afraid of going unheard. And even if an executive is willing to listen, a survivor might not practically be willing to speak up in such a visible environment.“If I’m fearful to go to my boss or to HR, am I going to go tell the CEO?” Pope asked. In addition to a culture of openness, Pope recommends companies partner with services such as Work Shield that independently handle workplace harassment claims so that employees don’t have to be afraid to report inappropriate behaviors. That way, businesses are working to prevent sexual misconduct and other forms of harassment by letting their workers know their door is open. And when something bad does happen, employees can feel empowered to come forward.

An illustrative guide to common words people tend to misuse

An illustrative guide to common words people tend to misuse An illustrative guide to common words people tend to misuse We’ve all been there. There are just certain words that sound so much alike even though they have completely different meanings. And sometimes, when we are required to spell them, it is a STRUGGLE. That is why we are so grateful for illustrator Bruce Worden’s brilliantly clever depictions of some of your favorite homophones. He actually made one of these illustrations on a weekly basis from 2011 through 2016. He told MyModernMet  that he “was inspired to do it because I felt like, as spell-check software became more and more reliable, I was seeing a surprising amount of homophone typos slipping through professionally edited content - presumably because the software still recognized them as real words and there weren’t enough human eyes on the job. I just wanted to do something to be ‘part of the solution’ instead of shaking my fist at the air.”In addition to the solution, Worden has also provided us with a bit of wit … or whit … whatever. Check out some of his best below (with his descriptions) and try not to laugh out loud - and for more of Worden’s wordplay, visit his  Homophones, Weakly  blog. As in, “I just can’t concentrate on this meeting.”Remember the difference. Very, very important. In the summer, I say “shoo” to my shoes.Happy Halloween!Sometimes I wonder how often people realize these are two separate words. With an E â€"  items or actions that match, are opposites, form a complete unit, or otherwise go hand-in-hand. With an I â€" an indication of approval. “My compliments to the chef for the way this hair complements my soup.”I know what you’re thinking; but I wasn’t gonna shill for some fast food restaurant here …So many combinations of Ls and Ts! And As and Es! Who can keep them all straight??As in, “You and your armband-wearing, flying-Vâ€"playing, synth band get the fuck out of my club!”I like this one; a  set of homophones that includes  three different parts of speech and a pair of homonyms! Bare â€" (adj. / v.) uncovered / to uncover. Bear â€" (n.) a type of large carnivorous animal. /  (v.) to carry.Right â€" 1: opposite of left. 2: correct. Rite â€" ceremony, ritual. Wright â€" worker, craftsperson. Write â€" oh, jeez, just try to define writing, wouldja? Let’s see … to communicate using visual/tactile symbols that represent words/concepts. Or something like that. Sheesh. If you’re reading this, you know what writing is!With an A â€" a type of berry. With an E â€" (n) a flow of water or electricity. Dont Make this Simple Error on LinkedIn

Dont Make this Simple Error on LinkedIn Dont Make this Simple Error on LinkedIn I just had a client whose LinkedIn profile wouldnt come up in Google searches, despite the fact that he has an relatively unusual name. Nor did he appear in the LinkedIn search directory. We couldnt figure it out until we realized that he had included initials after his name. He is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and thinking it would help with recruiters, he included those initials after his name, listing himself as Joe Brown, PMP (not his real name). Unfortunately, the search technologies thought that PMP was part of his name, so when you search Joe Brown in Google, his profile doesnt appear. This is easy to fix he can just remove the initials from his name and add them to the Professional Headline which comes up right after his name. Once Google reindexes his page, hell start to appear in the results. But now you know no initials after your name on LinkedIn!

United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP)

United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP) United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP) Military experience is an outstanding resume-builder if you know how to sell it, but everyone’s looking for that extra edge - something they can back up with certificates and credentials. One option for sailors and Marines (and the Coast Guard) is the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP), a partnership between the US Department of Labor (DOL) and the military that lets service members use their on-duty experience to earn journeyman status in a trade. Requirements Designed as an on-the-job training tool, USMAP is only for active duty members of the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard who already have a Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) or rating, a high school diploma or GED, and enough time on their enlistment contract to finish an apprenticeship. Because they’re not employed full-time in a MOS, reservists, unfortunately, cannot participate in USMAP although they could still find civilian apprenticeships on their own (more on that later.) Because USMAP is intended to give servicemembers a leg up using their actual military experience, you need to have a MOS/rating (or an official duty assignment outside your MOS) that corresponds to a journeyman trade. (In other words, an infantryman can’t enroll for a construction apprenticeship just because that’s the job he wants after the military - unless he’s assigned to official and regular duties, outside his MOS, working in construction.) Here’s an example that could work: As a career planner in the Marine Corps, Joe was also assigned as the command’s local photographer for portraits and public relations shots. With some creative thinking and some off-duty education, Joe might have got himself an apprenticeship in photography normally only available to combat camera operators. The downside? Since USMAP only allows one apprenticeship at a time, hed have gambled away his shot at a human resources certificate relevant to his actual MOS. Eligible Occupations USMAP’s Self-Service website offers a convenient list of eligible MOS and ratings that are not only staggering in size but surprising in some of the fields it covers. For the sake of brevity, here’s a count of the Navy and Marine occupational fields that aren’t covered by USMAP: Musicians (MU/5500) and air traffic controllers (AC/7200) in either branch. In the Navy, there are no USMAP apprenticeships for Interpretive Cryptologic Technicians (CTI) or Navy Divers (ND).In the Marines, Infantry (0300), Training (0900), Tank and Amphibious Assault Vehicles Operators (1800), Linguists (2700), Chemical/Biological/Radioactive/Nuclear Technicians (5700), and Flight Crews (7300) have no journeyman equivalent. A Few Surprises While it seems USMAP excludes all direct-combat jobs like infantry for the presumed reason that they have no equivalent civilian trade I found a few interesting exceptions: Special Warfare Operators (SO) aka Navy Seals are actually eligible, at grade E-7 and above, for an apprenticeship as a Master Homeland Security Specialist if they’re officially assigned the Navy Enlisted Classification Code (NEC) for Disaster Preparedness Operations and Training Specialist (9598) or Anti-Terrorism Training Supervisor Instructor (9501).The Marine Corps’ artillery occupational field (0800) actually has a few journeyman equivalents: Cannoneers (0811) can apprentice as government service ordnance artificers, Fire Controllers (0844) as surveyor assistants, and Sensor Support Techs (0847) as weather observers. Education USMAP claims that it “requires no off-duty hours,” but you do need to log 144 hours of formal training for every 2,000 hours (about a year) of apprenticeship work. Fortunately, formal military training for your job can knock a lot of that out in the beginning, and even relevant correspondence courses such as those offered by the Marine Corps Institute (which can also boost promotion potential) count toward the requirement. The worst-case scenario is, of course, having to take off-duty courses using tuition assistance or the GI Bill. But a little education never hurt anyone. Other Apprenticeship Programs There’s a conspicuous lack of information out there regarding apprenticeship programs for the Army, although a program has popped up in the past few years to help soldiers in the Army Reserve and National Guard.   Under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, veterans may also be eligible for payments to support vocational, technical, and on-the-job training. However, these (with the exception of GAPI) are not military-sponsored programs  and are not necessarily apprenticeships. To become a journeyman this way, you’d still have to seek out, apply for, and gain acceptance to an apprenticeship program sponsored by a civilian employer that incorporates vocational training approved for GI Bill payments. Unfortunately, working a civilian apprenticeship opens up the possibility of being paid less than minimum wage, not to mention working outside the uniquely supportive environment of the military.
